Teamsters bills on the move in Sacramento!

Our Union is hard at work at the State Capitol this month, fighting for laws that respect and protect California workers. Teamsters Local 2010 and the California Teamsters PAC are sponsoring two especially important bills for UC and CSU workers this year: AB 504 and Assembly Constitutional Amendment (ACA) 6.

AB 504, introduced by Assemblymember Eloise Reyes of the Inland Empire, will establish and protect the rights of public employees to honor a picket line if the bill is passed. No retaliation of any kind would be allowed against UC or CSU employees who stand with their striking colleagues!

ACA 6 is the Basic Labor Standards for The University of California Bill, introduced by Assemblymember Matt Haney of San Francisco. ACA 6 would put on the ballot an amendment to the California Constitution to remove the UC’s 150-year old exemption from basic labor standards. Time after time, judges rule that because of the UC’s constitutional status, the UC cannot be held liable for failing to meet the standards of equal pay, minimum wage, overtime pay, and paid leave that apply to every other California employer. California voters must be given the opportunity to correct this injustice!

"Teamsters 2010 is becoming a legislative powerhouse, passing cutting edge laws to protect workers’ rights. Our bill, AB 504, will guarantee all workers the fundamental right to honor a picket line. And ACA 6 will make sure that UC obeys worker protection laws that every other employer in the state follows!"

Both  AB 504 and ACA 6 are currently awaiting a hearing in the Assembly Appropriations Committee. The Appropriations Committee is the fiscal committee of the Assembly and must hear and vote on every bill that will have a fiscal impact on the state by May 19. Our Union is working hard to make sure AB 504 and ACA 6 get the votes they need to improve working conditions for every member of Local 2010!
