Happy Juneteenth!

Happy Juneteenth to all of our Teamsters 2010 members and allies! Today we celebrate the anniversary of June 19, 1865, when enslaved persons across Texas finally found out they were free. ✊🏽✊🏿✊🏾 Our Union is proud to have bargained for recognition of the Juneteenth holiday in our UC contracts statewide. We wish everyone a happy Freedom Day!

“Juneteenth commemorates the beginning of the end of slavery in the United States, marking a significant milestone in our nation’s journey toward freedom and justice. On January 1, 1863,  President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation was a major turning point in the fight for freedom, igniting a fervent push to end slavery that has resonated throughout our history. On June 17, 2021, President Joe Biden Signed the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act. establishing June 19, 2021, a National holiday. The fight for equality and justice has continued for more than a century, witnessing both progress and setbacks. Yet, as Dr. King famously said,  ‘Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.’

On this day, we reflect upon the immense sacrifice, tenacity and strength Black Americans have demonstrated in their enduring struggle to secure freedom, justice, and the promise of independence for all. As we honor this day, the labor movement stands with all those who continue to miss out on the freedom and opportunity that is their birthright. Teamsters local 2010 honors the legacy of Juneteenth and will keep pushing forward to ensure that Justice, equality and freedom become a reality for everyone.”

Catherine Cobb, President of Teamsters Local 2010

“Today we celebrate liberation from slavery as we rededicate ourselves to the continuing fight for freedom and equity for all people.”
