Teamsters Local 2010, Coalition of UC Unions, Win Major Legal Victory for our Jobs and Freedoms

Teamsters Local 2010 and our sister UC Unions won a major legal victory in our fight to protect our jobs and freedoms from attack by the federal government. On Friday, Nov. 14, a federal court granted a sweeping preliminary injunction in our lawsuit against the Administration’s attempts to slash millions of dollars of grants that fund our jobs, to extort over a billion dollars from UC, and to restrict our freedom to protest and picket on campus.

“This ruling is a great win for the rights of UC workers, our jobs, our freedoms and our future,” said Jason Rabinowitz, Teamsters Local 2010 Secretary-Treasurer. “Teamsters Local 2010 will continue to stand up and take on anyone who attacks our members’ rights, and the rights of all working people. The Trump Administration’s extortionate lawsuit and multimillion dollar funding cuts threaten every one of the 20,000 Teamsters working at University of California. The Administration’s attempt to limit free speech on campus threatens our fundamental rights as workers to picket, strike, rally, and join together in a union.”

The lawsuit was filed in September 2025 by Teamsters Local 2010 and a coalition of faculty, staff and student organizations, challenging the Trump Administration’s illegal and coercive use of frivolous lawsuits to attack the University of California system and threaten the jobs and freedoms of Teamsters members and other UC workers and students. The court found that threats or coercion around federal funding are unconstitutional and that using federal money as leverage against the university violates our rights to free expression and union activity.

This is another example of the fact that when Teamsters negotiate, when we organize, when we defend ourselves against unconstitutional attacks, WE WIN. Teamsters will always fight for our ability to speak up, protest, picket, rally, and demand respect — without fear that our jobs or institutions will be punished for it. We will also fight to protect our jobs from budget and funding cuts, no matter who is proposing them.

This is an incredible win, but it’s not over. We must stay engaged and make sure our rights are enforced. An injunction is not a guarantee of final victory, but it is a signal from the Court that our case is strong.  There are copies of the Preliminary Injunction Decision and Order for your convenience found by clicking the buttons below.
