Fighting for Equality on International Women’s Day

Today we celebrate International Women’s Day, a global day of activism dedicated to advancing the cause of women’s equality around the world. The theme of this year’s IWD is Embracing Equity—focusing not just on the need for equality but on the equitable measures we can take to actually achieve an equal world.

As a Union that is majority women in our membership and at all levels of leadership, Teamsters Local 2010 is proud to fight for gender equality and an end to all forms of discrimination. As Teamsters, we’re already guaranteed more equality in the workplace than any non-union worker: the US Department of Labor found in 2022 that there is no better way to reduce the gender pay gap than to be a union worker.

Female union members make on average 23% more than women who are not members of a union. For Black and Latina women, the number is even higher and the gain even greater. Union women have more guaranteed paid leave, stronger protections against discrimination and harassment, and more power in the workplace than non-union women. Equity and equality are the foundation of our Teamsters contracts and what we fight for every day as Union members.

It’s not enough to simply talk about gender equality. We must work toward it, together as Teamsters, just as we work toward racial equality, workers’ rights, and dignity and respect in the workplace. By showing our power at work, enforcing our rights with our Teamsters contracts, and fighting for stronger contracts year after year, we are achieving a more equal world.
