On June 1-2, our K4 Skilled Trades Bargaining Team resumed bargaining while management waited for UCOP to provide a response to our proposals on healthcare caps and subsidies. Although management proposed subsidies to healthcare premiums, they failed to provide any caps, resulting in little protection for our members against ever-increasing healthcare costs.
Our team made it clear that caps on increases to insurance premiums continue to be a priority in order for our team to move on wages. Without setting a maximum monthly insurance premium increase, Skilled Trades workers are unable to determine how much income they need to make ends meet. For example, one member reported that they pay $200 more each month due to currently not having protection against unlimited increases.
These increases, combined with no new proposal from management with respect to wages, are essentially a pay cut, and not providing caps when other bargaining units have this benefit, shows that Skilled Trades workers are perceived differently compared to their UCLA coworkers.
There was also a proposal to observe a floating holiday in January 2027, but management said there are issues with UCPath implementing it.
UCLA Teamsters Action: Student Move Out Day
Join our Bargaining Team and Skilled Trades Board as we pass out Teamsters flyers to students and families on Move Out Day. Families need to know that UCLA refuses to bargain fairly with Skilled Trades workers even as student dorms deteriorate!
Friday, June 12
12:00 PM – 1:00 PM
Meet at Carnesale Commons Housing Maintenance Office

“Skilled Trades workers must have a buffer against runaway insurance costs. We already bear the difficulty of working in one of the most expensive areas of the state. We should have a maximum amount that UCLA can increase our healthcare costs like other UCLA workers do.”
