UCSD K6 Teamsters Bargaining Update – June 12, 2026

Update for Teamsters Skilled Trades Bargaining on Wednesday, June 3, Tuesday, June 9, and Friday, June 12.
(Next Bargaining Team Negotiations Scheduled for Tuesday, June 23, Wednesday, July 8, Tuesday, July 14, Wednesday, July 15, Thursday, July 16 and Friday, July 17.)

(1) Bargaining Meeting on Wednesday, June 3:

On Wednesday, June 3, the Teamsters Bargaining Team did not meet with management. The Team spent the day in caucus session reviewing and writing contract proposals.

Bargaining Meeting on Tuesday, June 9:

Teamsters and/or Management proposed the following Articles on Tuesday, June 9:

  • Article 6 – Probationary Period
  • Article 8 – Hours of Work
  • Article 9 – Overtime
  • Article 14 – Vacation
  • Article 16 – Leaves of Absence
  • Article 18 – Layoff and Reduction in Time
  • Article 25 – Protective Clothing
  • Article 41 – Shift Differential

(2) Teamsters and Management signed the following Tentative Agreements during the Contract Bargaining Session on Tuesday, June 9.

Article 6 – Probationary Period (UCSD Proposal on 6/9/26)

Contract Improvement: UCSD agreed with Teamsters that new hire probationary employees will be evaluated in writing at least once during the full probationary period at approximately mid-point.

Article 14 – Vacation (UCSD Proposal on 6/9/26)

Contract Improvement: UCSD agreed with Teamsters that vacation credit accumulation starts from the first date of hire and can be used after accrual.

Article 18 – Layoff and Reduction in Time (Teamsters Proposal on 6/9/26)

Contract Improvement: UCSD agreed with Teamsters that the 45-day notice of layoff or reduction in time is a requirement, not only when it is feasible for UCSD to notify an employee. (Removes UCSD discretion). Pay-in-Lieu Provision updated from a 20-day standard to 45-day standard aligning with the 45-day notice requirement.

(3) Articles Proposed between Teamsters and UCSD

Article 8 – Hours of Work (Proposed by Teamsters)

Notice of Work Schedule changes will be increased from 10-days to 30-days.

Time off Between Shifts: Teamsters are proposing that all employees who have completed their regular schedule of work for the day have a minimum of at least a full 12-hours of rest before starting the next shift.  If an employee is assigned to work within the 12-hour rest period they shall be paid overtime for the actual hours work during the 12-hour rest period.

Article 8 – Hours of Work (Proposed by UCSD)

Notice of Work Schedule changes will be increased from 10-days to 21-days.

Time off Between Shifts: UCSD has also proposed language for a full 12-hour rest period between shifts aligning with similar goals as the Teamsters proposal.

Article 9 – Overtime (Proposed by Teamsters)

Teamsters propose to use hours sick leave hours in the calculation of overtime.

Teamsters propose an increase the amount of accumulated CTO Bank hours from (120-hours OT/180-hours straight time) to (160-hours OT/240-hours straight time)

Teamsters propose to increase Watch Stander accumulated CTO from 40-hours to 120-hours.

Article 9 – Overtime (Proposed by UCSD)

UCSD proposes to keep the current contact language not to use sick leave hours in the calculation of overtime.

UCSD proposes to keep the current contact language CTO Bank hours at (120-hours OT/180-hours straight time).

UCSD proposes to keep the current contact language that Watch Standers can only accumulate 40-hours CTO.

Article 16 – Leave of Absence (Proposed by Teamsters)

The Teamsters union attorney completed a comprehensive legal review of the updated legal changes proposed by UCSD’s proposal on 1/23/26. The Teamsters union attorney recommended that this contract article maintain current contract language in the Family Medical Leave definitions section and keeping the current contract language on reinstatement for leaves for Qualified Exigency Leave.

Article 25 – Protective Clothing (Proposed by UCSD)

UCSD proposed new language to facilitate the use of prescription safety glasses in-line with departmental guidelines ensuring that that UCSD will provide up to a $250 vendor reimbursement every two years.

UCSD proposed new language to facilitate the use of safety boots in-line with departmental guidelines ensuring that that UCSD will provide up to $225 per year vendor reimbursement for safety footwear.

Article 25 – Protective Clothing (Proposed by Teamsters)

Teamsters are agreeable with UCSD’s new prescription safety glasses proposal.

Teamsters are agreeable with UCSD’s new safety boot language, but counter proposed an increase UCSD’s proposal from $225 vendor reimbursement to $250 vendor reimbursement.

Article 41 – Shift Differential (Proposed by Teamsters)

Teamsters proposed altered increases to all shift differentials pay. Teamsters maintained their proposal to create a weekend shift differential pay.

Bargaining Meeting on Friday, June 12:

On Friday, June 12, the Teamsters Bargaining Team did not meet with management. The Team spent the day in caucus session reviewing and writing contract proposals.

(4) SPECIAL NOTE: All (TA) Tentative Agreements made between UCSD Management, and your Bargaining Team must be ratified by a majority vote of Teamsters K6-Unit Skilled Trades members during the Ratification Vote at the conclusion of bargaining.
