UCLA Skilled Trades Bargaining Update
Our Teamsters 2010 Skilled Trades Bargaining Team will begin presenting our Economic proposals on Wed., May 11.
Last minute preparations – Make sure you talk with a bargaining team member and let us know:
- If you need a license to perform your job.
- If you receive hazard pay for job duties not addressed in the contract.
Who are we? Teamsters!
As skilled trades workers, we are UCLA’s unsung heroes of the COVID-19 pandemic. While many of those employed by UCLA, worked out of the safety of their homes, we, the
Electricians, Engineers, Mechanics, Workers, Masons, Painters, Plumbers, Signmakers, Carpenters, Locksmiths, Roofers, Flooring Installers, Sheetmetal Workers, Vending Machine Technicians, and Elevator, Residential, Irrigation and Food Service Mechanics
kept our infrastructure safe for our students, patients, guests, and campus community. We maintained and repaired the University infrastructure. We updated ventilation and HVAC systems, repaired leaks, and faulty electrical systems. We remodeled campus buildings to attract and retain students in University Housing, guests at University hotels, and patients and their families at UCLA hospitals and, of course, provided upkeep in what we traditionally think of as a University – campus classrooms, offices, and laboratories.
We were at workday after day, adjusting to daily changes in processes and procedures, working together but alone. These were the days before UCLA provided us with N95 protections, before vaccinations, and before experts declared it safe to venture out. We risked our lives, and the numbers show that our members got COVID-19. And, we remember Emmanuel Gomez, HK Electrician, who died from COVID-19 that he acquired at work.
Who are we?
We are part of a labor movement that is on the move – demanding dignity for our professions and asking for fairness at the bargaining table from UCLA – an employer who received millions of dollars from the American Rescue Plan Act – an employer who can afford to pay their workers more! UCLA has been allocated more than $181 million in federal stimulus with $99.2 million of that available for operational impacts of the pandemic. UC Health has reported receiving more than $500 million from the CARES Act Provider Relief Fund and is seeking further FEMA reimbursements.
Get your walking shoes ready!
Last Wednesday, our Skilled Trades Bargaining Team and UCLA tentatively agreed to Article 17, Vacations; Article 39, Subcontracting and Article 9, Apprentices. However, UCLA has maintained its silence on Article 1, Recognition and Article 2, Classifications and Reclassifications. Our Team presented these articles around the end of February/beginning of March, and we are still awaiting responses. When we questioned UCLA about when we could expect a proposal, the atmosphere in the room changed.

UCLA Skilled Trades/Oficios
Electricians, Engineers, Mechanics, Workers, Masons, Painters, Plumbers, Sign-makers, Carpenters, Locksmiths, Roofers, Flooring Installers, Sheetmetal Workers, Vending Machine Technicians, and Elevator, Residential, Irrigation and Food Service Mechanics
