Teamsters 2010 Skilled Trades started bargaining with UCSD management on August 20, 2021. To date there has been approximately thirty-five bargaining sessions. The next bargaining sessions will be scheduled in July. These bargaining sessions have focused on updating contract language and working condition, but talks have also begun on wages and benefits.
The current K6-Unit contract has a total of forty-six Articles. To date the Teamsters have tentatively agreed to twenty-eight Articles.
The Union has been waiting for Management’s Second Wage Proposal for over a month and counting. Management’s first wage proposal is unacceptable. Management proposed: Effective July, 2022 – 5% wage increase ATB; effective July, 2023 – 3% wage increase ATB; effective July, 2024 – 3% wage increase ATB. The Union will continue to fight back for fair raises.

NEW: 01-05-22 Article 1 Recognition
Contract improvements: Six new Title Codes were added to the contract (8191) Plumber Pipefitter, (8190) Plumber Pipefitter Lead, (8094) Central Utilities Plant Operator/Co-Gen, (7784) Central Utilities Plant Operator/Co-Gen Lead, (7785) Co-Gen Instrument Control Technician and (8093) Apprentice Co-Gen Operator.
10-29-21 Article 2 – Out of Classification Assignment/Classification Review
Contract improvements: In the past, input concerning a re-classification request could only be discussed at the quarterly labor/management meetings. Now the union can call a meeting at any time to discuss re-classification request.
11-22-21 Article 5 – Nondiscrimination in Employment
Contract improvements: Updated imposed (protected) nondiscrimination laws added to contract. Additional language to improve union’s ability to file discrimination and/or sexual harassment grievances against the university.
01-03-22 Article 6 – Probationary
Contract improvements: No mandatory probationary time for a preferential rehire upon return within one year.
10-11-21 Article 7 – Positions and Appointments
Contract improvements: Language change from three (3) months to ninety (90) calendar days.
02-17-22 Article 10 – Performance Evaluation
Contract improvements: Grammar change. Disputes arising from this Article may be reviewed processed under the Grievance Procedure.
02-17-22 Article 12 – Holidays
Contract improvements: Extra holiday Juneteenth (June 19th or announced equivalent)
11-12-21 Article 14 – Vacation
Contract improvements: For Occasional unscheduled/Unplanned vacation days, additional language was added “If the request is made fifteen (15) calendar days or more in advance, the University has ten (10) calendar days to approve or deny the request”.
12-17-21 Article 15 – Military Leave
Contract improvements: “Civil Air Patrol Leave” was added to military leave article.
02-22-22 Article 17 – Discipline and Dismissal
Contract improvements: Updated notification process to union and employee.
02-07-22 Article 18 Layoff and Reduction in Time
Contract improvements: Strengthen layoff language for “layoff inverse order of seniority”. Management cannot go out of seniority order during a layoff if a senior employee can learn a new position within 6-months.
02-07-22 Article 29 – Medical Separation
Contract Improvements: Updated clarification language. Easier process for reemployment of a medically separated employee who has been medically cleared to return to work.
12-17-21 Article 30 – Work Incurred Injury or Illness
Contract improvements: Removed outdated contract date marker from July 1, 1997.
12-17-21 Article 31 – Reasonable Accommodations/Rehabilitation
Contract improvements: Language clarification. The University will provide reasonable accommodations for employees with a disability or become disabled.
12-3-22 Article 37 – Training and Development
Contract improvements: Union steward trainings are now included in the training and development article. Skilled trades are now eligible for up to 40 hours of approved training and development hours per year.
NEW: 06-21-22 Article 42 – Apprenticeship Program / Apprenticeship Program Addendum
Contract improvements: No new major contract improvements. Combined the Article with the Addendum all into one Article. Will make it easier for UCSD-Health to start recruiting apprentices.

Contract improvements: No changes

Contract improvements: Updated contract language
10-29-22 Article – Respectful, Fair Treatment
Contract improvements: Gives the union the ability to file a grievance against management for persistent bullying and significant disruptive behavior.
The following Articles are being negotiated together as package proposals.
Package proposals are often offered by management and the union as a way of moving the two sides closer to an agreement on challenging contract articles. This is a very common negotiation practice used by both union and management.
